Dangerous Goods (DG's) are substances and articles which have explosive, flammable, toxic, infectious or corrosive properties. They pose a risk to public safety, property or the environment and thus the transport of DG's is heavily regulated. Below is a rundown on some of the terminology surrounding DG's in MachShip.
End User License Agreement and Dangerous Goods Declaration
Due to the regulations around the transport of DG's, MachShip will require all users and companies with the access to consign DG's, to agree to the MachShip End User License Agreement. This agreement outlines the contractual agreement between MachShip and you, the end user. If you would like to view the agreement it can be accessed at this link.
You will need to either agree to this form or if the consignment does not have dangerous goods you will need to agree to the declaration that the consignment has no dangerous goods on it. MachShip will store all of this information if it is required at a later time.
Note: This does not absolve your company or your staff from the individual responsibilities as a consignor of DG's, and you will need to ensure that all packaging, labeling and documentation is as per the requirements of the ADG Code.
Dangerous Goods Classes/Subclasses
DG substances and articles are allocated to one of nine classes, some of which are subdivided into divisions. The subclass of dangerous goods will indicate what danger a DG will apply should it react based on its primary class.
As an example, a class 8 subclass 5.1 will be a corrosive acid, which, when the acid reacts, lets off an oxidising gas.
Class 1: Explosives
(These cannot be consigned in MachShip)
Class 2: Gases
Class 3: Flammable Liquids
Class 4: Flammable Solids
Class 5: Oxidizing substances and organic peroxides
Class 6: Toxic and infectious substances
Class 7: Radioactive Material
(These cannot be consigned in MachShip)
Class 8: Corrosive Substances
Class 9: Miscellaneous Dangerous Substances and Articles
Packaging of Dangerous Goods
Before DG's are transported, they are required to be packed in approved containers and correctly marked. The packing group of the goods will determine the standard of packaging used and the number of items in each package.
Packing Group 1 = Greatest Danger
Packing Group 2 = Medium Danger
Packing Group 3 = Minor Danger
N/A = The packing Group is not applicable
Dangerous Goods Compatibility
Due to the way in which certain classes of DG's will react when mixed, there are regulations which apply around which DG's can be safely transported together. This is known as DG compatibility. In order to help consignors with these complex compatibility matrixes, MachShip runs a compatibility check at both consignment creation and also over a manifest.
Please note, MachShip does understand that there are ways to segregate DG's via the use of truck and dog trailers, A and B trailers or through segregation devices. MachShip also understands that through the use of these segregation methods and devices, you can ship incompatible goods on the same consignment and the same manifest. But due to the inability to verify how the goods are packed or loaded, Machship has made the decision that all consignments and manifests must be compliant.
Dangerous Goods Paperwork
In order to help with the compliant transport of dangerous goods, MachShip will produce both a Dangerous Goods Transport Document and the Multimodal Dangerous Goods (MO-41) form. These forms have been checked off with every carrier who has agreed to transport dangerous goods and are compliant with the current ADG code regulations.
Please note that is is the end user's responsibility to ensure all documentation is correct and compliant.
